Sicily: #2 Misteri di Trapani
Being in Trapani for Easter was a unique showcase of religious (and local) traditions.

The Misteri di Trapani are a centuries-old Good Friday procession in Trapani, Sicily, built around twenty life-sized sculptural groups depicting episodes from the Passion and death of Christ. Each “mistero” is carried through the city by a traditional guild or confraternity, moving slowly with a distinctive swaying step to funeral marches played by brass bands. It is less a tidy parade than a long, solemn civic ritual: devotional, theatrical, physical, and deeply local, with the whole city orbiting these heavy baroque tableaux for nearly twenty-four hours.
